Nepal says it will need billions in funding to rebuild after flash floods

The deadly flash floods on the Nepal-Tibet border – which scientists are still studying the exact cause of – at least 1,200 people have died and thousands more are missing. It is one of the  vulnerable countries for the climate crisis, even though it is one of the lowest emitters of global greenhouse emissions.

Nepal expects its reconstruction and recovery costs to reach between $4 billion and $5 billion—nearly 10% of its entire economy—following catastrophic flash floods. The disaster was triggered by a massive glacial collapse on August 26, 2026, which sent a wall of mud, ice, and debris through the Trishuli River basin. The floods have claimed more than 1,250 lives, with over 4,200 people still reported missing.

The government has formally approached the United Nations-backed Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage for urgent financial support as it handles the crisis. Initial damage assessments show extensive destruction to infrastructure, including critical energy facilities. Private donors, such as Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and neighboring countries have begun pledging initial aid to support the relief efforts

Summary of the big loss from the Nepal Flood

  • Energy grid impact: Twelve major hydropower stations were damaged, knocking out 12% of Nepal's electricity capacity.
  • Housing losses: Over 20,000 houses require rebuilding, with 7,500 completely destroyed.
  • Infrastructure damage: Total destruction to roads, bridges, and power lines exceeds $1.3 billion

Scores killed and hundreds missing after Nepal flash floods

At least 1200 people were killed and more than 5000 listed as missing Wednesday in Nepal after flash flooding tore through valleys in the in Nepal.  341 foreigners listed as missing, according to Nepal's Tourism Board, citing information from tour companies.

The flash floods decimated villages, slamming into houses, roads, bridges and power plants. Videos  on social media show violent torrents of water surging through valleys and mountain passes, tearing down bridges and dams and sweeping away buildings.

Videos circulated online shows a nonstop moving river of earth rising overtaking very tall fortress like buildings, and erasing everything in its path. People looked smaller than ants and it looked like an apocalyptic event.

Nepal's mountainous terrain, dotted with deep valleys and narrow gorges, makes rescue and relief operations challenging. The flash flood was caused by an earthquake that triggered a large landslide, which blocked the Bhote Koshi River. But the US Geological Survey, which studies earthquakes, has now said that further analysis indicates "that the seismic energy was instead generated by a landslide" by itself Landslides or avalanches can have various triggers. One possibility is that water - either from rainfall or melting ice - may have destabilized the ground or ice  Major hydropower and transmission facilities were also damaged in the flooding.
