Who is Martyr? --the killer or the 'Killed one'--

While simply surfing the net, I found a news published in today's "The Hindu', an English daily widely circulated in entire India.

I am posting the news as it is, though the short news can also be grabbed in their own official webpage here.

Indira Gandhi killers labelled martyrs

Amritsar: In a controversial action, the Akal Takht on Sunday declared the assassins of the former Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, as martyrs of the community.

At a special religious function, organised here, Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh were hailed for targeting Indira Gandhi for “sending the Indian Army to the Golden Temple for Operation Blue Star in 1984.” The Takht is headed by Jathedar Gyani Joginder Singh Vedanti.

Satwant and Kehar have been hanged to death.

In my personal opinion, 'the killer' 'itself' can never be a martyr. I'm afraid as this news will be spread in Nepal the killer of Krishna Mohan Shrestha may also be given the glory and the great "Madi Bus blasters" will also be awarded.

Well let's see together the impact and after effect of this, and get ready to regard killers and assassinators of our local leaders and several civilians as the martyrs of our country too.

We have to see this thing from either sides. For Indian government, Jaswant and his comrade can be killers but for those Sikhs who are fighting for "Khalistan" and believe that Indira Gandhi had been extreme to them, they are the heroes.

For North Indian Hindus, Ravana is a demon but South Indians and Shrilankans worship Ravana as their god.

Captain Yagyajeet Thapa ( I am little bit confused on name) who dared to bomb king Mahendra was hero for the people but for Panchayati Rulers, he was the criminal.

Bin Laden is a demon for Americans and western world but for many muslims, he is the new prophet.

There can be many examples like this. Hoina ra?

Whoever is that, if law testifies one is guilty, he/she should get punishment. It doesnt apply for someone specific. Otherwise what is the meaning of law?

With due respect to all.... let me make a coment over coments...

Well just now I checked in "wordweb"; the free dictonary. Meaning of 'martyr" is described like this: "One who suffers for the sake of principle"

So I think only those "who suffers for the sake of principle" can be regarded as martyr but not those who make other ppl to suffer.

Freinds! please feel free to disagree with me and express your views.

brilliantman ! I am 100% agreed with your comment this time.

Though I am not a Sikh, I too hate Indira Gandhi for the so called "operation bluestar"

concerning to your ....

I still think they are not 'martyrs' but they are 'victim' of a egoist politician.

You are also write in one thing, that a group or ppl with some different ideology or different view will still regard them as martyrs.

Only a legitimate government of a country can declare someone Martyr and like they say "all that glitters is not gold"

"All those victims are also not martyrs"

But, like you said: a group or any organization are free to declare it and enjoy this kind of illegitimate glory.

Finally, thank you agian for your valuable views.
