Nepal comes right after India and China in US Student Visa Cancellation

 

March 25 Update: Since Trump took the office on January 20, 4700 student visas were terminated. Now the Trump administration has restored the student visa registrations of thousands of foreign students studying in the United States who had minor — and often dismissed — legal infractions.

The Justice Department announced the wholesale reversal in federal court Friday after weeks of intense scrutiny by courts and dozens of restraining orders issued by judges who deemed the mass termination of students from a federal database — used by universities and the federal government to track foreign students in the U.S. — as flagrantly illegal.

The USA has 1.1 million students in its database, which adds $44 billion to the US economy in one year.

Nepal comes right after India and China in US Student Visa Cancellation. Bangladesh and South Korea make up the top five countries in the list of students whose visas have been cancelled. Many of these actions are being taken without prior notice, often based on minor legal infractions or vague grounds, leaving thousands of international students suddenly out of status, unable to work, and uncertain about their future in the U.S. 

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has terminated 4,736 SEVIS records, the majority of which were linked to F-1 visa holders. Yet, only 14 percent of affected students received any formal notice from ICE, all of whom were on OPT. An additional 7 percent received no communication at all—neither from the government nor from their educational institutions.

Main target for the visa cancellations are students who were involved in political protest But some students whose visa have been cancelled had police records such as speeding, parking violations, seat belt violations, failure to yield to emergency vehicles etc. Some have serious crimes such as domestic violence.

Here is a list of countries that have been impacted:

1. India:
   • Number Affected: Approximately 163–164 students (based on AILA’s report of 327 total visa cancellations, with ~50% being Indian).

   • Details: Chinese students (277,398 in 2023–24) are the second-largest group affected. High-profile cases include a Dartmouth Ph.D. student and an MIT student. Some revocations are linked to minor infractions or unclear reasons.
     
     
3. South Korea:
   • Number Affected: Not explicitly quantified, but  among the 327 cases likely fewer than 10 based on proportional estimates.

राजावादी आन्दोलनलाई राष्ट्रिय प्रजातन्त्र पार्टी (राप्रपा) जस्ता दलहरूले समर्थन गर्दै आएका छन्। साथै, हिन्दु राष्ट्र र राजतन्त्रको पुनर्स्थापना गर्ने मुद्दालाई जोडेर नेपाल र भारतका हिन्दुत्ववादी समूहहरूले पनि अप्रत्यक्ष रूपमा प्रभाव पार्ने कोसिस गरेको अनुमान गरिएको छ, यद्यपि यसको ठोस प्रमाण भेटिएको छैन। मार्च २०२५ मा काठमाडौंमा भएको प्रदर्शनले यो आन्दोलनको बलियो उपस्थिति देखाएको छ।

तर, राजतन्त्र फर्काउने सम्भावना अहिलेलाई जटिल छ। ठूला राजनीतिक दलहरू, जस्तै नेकपा (एमाले), नेपाली कांग्रेस र माओवादी केन्द्रले यसको कडा विरोध गरेका छन्। प्रधानमन्त्री केपी शर्मा ओली र कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष शेरबहादुर देउबाले राजतन्त्र पुनर्स्थापना असम्भव रहेको बताएका छन्। संविधान संशोधन गरेर राजतन्त्र फर्काउन संसदमा दुई तिहाइ बहुमत आवश्यक पर्छ, जुन हालको राजनीतिक समीकरणमा कठिन देखिन्छ।

अर्कोतर्फ, विपक्षीहरूले राजतन्त्र फर्किए विगतको निरंकुश शासनको पुनरावृत्ति हुने तर्क अघि सारेका छन्। २०६२/६३ को जनआन्दोलनपछि राजतन्त्र हटाइएको इतिहास र गणतन्त्रले ल्याएका उपलब्धिहरू (जस्तै समावेशिता र लोकतान्त्रिक अधिकार) लाई जोगाउनुपर्ने पक्षमा पनि बलियो मत छ।

संक्षेपमा, नेपालमा राजा फर्काउने प्रयासमा राजावादीहरू सक्रिय छन् र जनताको एक हिस्साबाट समर्थन पाइरहेका छन्, तर संवैधानिक र राजनीतिक अवरोधका कारण यो प्रयास सफल हुने सम्भावना कम छ। यो बहसले देशमा अझै पनि राजनीतिक स्थिरता र सुशासनको खोजी जारी रहेको संकेत गर्छ।

Predictive modeling tells death toll could reach 10,000 people in Myanmar Earthquake

The death toll from a catastrophic 7.7-magnitude earthquake that hit Myanmar on Friday with reports of 1,600 dead. But Predictive modeling tells death toll could reach 10,000 people in Myanmar Earthquake. The quake struck around lunchtime on Friday, destroyed buildings and bridges. The epicenter was in Mandalay, Myanmar, the country's second-largest city. Even Bangkok, some 600 miles away, felt widespread shaking. 

 Myanmar is considered to be one of the most geologically "active" areas in the world because it sits on top of the convergence of four of these tectonic plates - the Eurasian plate, the Indian plate, the Sunda plate and the Burma microplate. There is a major fault called the Sagaing fault, which cuts right through Myanmar north to south and is more than 1,200km (746 miles) long. This earthquake was formed due to Sagaing fault releasing energy due to built up energy from Indian and Eurasian plates.

 The search and rescue operation has involved crews from the police, military and disaster relief, using drones, dogs and heavy equipment to search through the mountain of rubble, concrete, steel, dirt and rebar.

Mamta Kafle Bhatt a Nepali Mother in Virginia America is Still Missing

 

September 2025 Update: Prince William County Circuit Court Judge Kimberly Irving delays Naresh Bhatt’s murder trial more than a year after his defense attorneys argue they need time to prepare due to the massive amounts of evidence collected in the case. Irving sets the new jury trial date in October 2026 and last for seven weeks. The couple’s now 2-year-old daughter is being raised by Mamta’s family. 

 March 2025 update: Naresh Bhatt is facing murder and concealing a dead body charges. The trial is scheduled for September 2025. Police are still continuing the search for Mamta Kafle Bhatt's remains as they now prepare for trial. Investigators conducted over 44 search warrants and 50 physical searches, finding evidence such as blood and signs of a body being moved but Mamta’s body has not been found to this date. Manassas Park police say searches for Mamta Bhatt’s remains are underway at the Page County landfill, in Luray, Virginia, where trash is taken from the dumpsters in Manassas and Falls Church.  

September 20 update: Judge heard arguments for nearly three hours on Friday before she ruled there was “overwhelming evidence” to consider Naresh Bhatt a flight risk and danger to the community and denied bond. The judge cited new evidence presented by the Commonwealth for her decision, which included surveillance videos capturing Naresh Bhatt disposing multiple bags from his car between July 30 and 31, at times wearing white gloves, at various dump sites and trash compactors, one being at his child’s babysitter’s apartment in Manassas.

• February 2023: Police summoned to the Bhatt residence over allegations of disorderly conduct. Mamta told officers Naresh wouldn't give her documents and destroyed her phone.
• April 2023: Naresh did a Google search on his work computer asking how long does it take to get married after spouse dies.
• July 24, 2023: Mamta spoke with her childhood friend and mentioned her trouble marriage.
• July 27, 2024 8:17 p.m.: Mamta is last seen at UVA Prince William Medical Center in Manassas, where she worked as a nurse. She entered an unknown black car after canceling an Uber ride.
• July 28, 2024: Mamta posts a final video on her TikTok account alongside her daughter.
• July 29 Evening: The date of Mamta Bhatt’s final video call with her mother, to whom she habitually spoke twice a day. Her mom said Mamta's face was gloomy which is unusual of her. She never called her mom after that.
• July 30, 4:13 a.m.: Bhatt performs a Google search for “Diagram of brain” and at 4:30 a.m., looks up “Chicken farm near me.”
• July 30, 5:40 a.m.: Naresh Bhatt sends the Bhatts’ babysitter, Amanda, a text.
• July 30, 6:30 a.m.: Bhatt drops off the couple’s daughter, Neema, at the babysitter’s apartment at Clark Place in Manassas.
• July 30, 6:40 a.m.: Bhatt is seen on camera dropping several plastic and trash bags into a dumpster at the apartment complex.
• July 30, 8:12 a.m: Bhatt goes shopping at Home Depot purchasing rubber ice gloves.
• July 30, 8:21 a.m Bhatt was seen at Walmart, buying 3 knives 2 are missing, carpet cleaner, wipes and air freshners. 
• July 30, 5:22 p.m: Bhatt was seen buying extra strong trash bags at Home Depot.
• July 30 and July 31: Bhatt is seen on camera discarding bags at various dumpsters.
• July 31, 1:30 a.m.: Bhatt is captured on video in Falls Church retrieving bags from his Tesla and putting them into a trash compactor. His Tesla tracks him to that location, but his phone is inactive and not on his person at that time.
• July 31, 5:30 p.m.: Bhatt disposes of more items in the same dumpster at the babysitter’s apartment complex.
• July 31, 7 p.m.: Bhatt returns to the apartment complex to pick up Neema. The babysitter later tells police that Bhatt “was nervous and kept looking around,” Sami said.
• Between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. on July 31, over 150 gallons of water are consumed by the Bhatt residence – a far cry from the typical 3-4 gallons per hour.
• Aug. 1: Mamta did not show up for work at UVA Health Prince William Medical Center on August 1. Her work friend called police for welfare check. Naresh Bhatt’s phone is off with no activity, but Mamta Bhatt’s phone sends out a signal from Loudoun County. That day, Naresh Bhatt goes to eat at a Liberty gas station, walks back to his Tesla “with a visible limp,” , grabs some bags at his car, and walks over to a clothing donation bin – where police later find a bag with a white bath mat featuring light pink and reddish-brown staining that tests positive for blood.
• After Aug. 1: In addition to missing Neema’s first birthday on Aug. 20, Mamta Bhatt also misses her final United States Citizenship and Immigration Services appointment to become a U.S. citizen.
• Sometime after Aug. 2: Naresh Bhatt asks the downstairs tenants in the Bhatt residence to help him move the bed in his bedroom. 
• Aug. 2, 2024: Police conduct a welfare check at the Bhatt residence. Naresh Bhatt tells officers they are separating, Mamta got her green card and now she is running away, destroyed her phone, she is visiting one of her sister in New York or Texas.Bhatt said he saw her last time on evening of July 31.
• Aug. 4, 2024: Naresh Bhatt sends a text message to the same police officer who conducted the welfare check on Aug. 2. The officer responds a day later, on Aug. 5, and Mamta Bhatt is officially listed as a missing person.
• Aug. 8, 2024: Manassas Park police change the status of the Mamta Bhatt case to "involuntarily missing."
• Aug. 5, 2024: Naresh Bhatt changes his story, saying Mamta had destroyed her own phone, according to prosecutors.

• Aug. 29, 2024: A judge agrees to a motion by Naresh Bhatt's defense attorney to waive his preliminary hearing, sending the felony charge of concealing a dead body directly to a grand jury.
• Aug. 30, 2024:  Manassas Park police detectives and the Prince William County Police Search and Rescue Team descend on Signal Hill Park in a search for evidence in the case. Police said evidence was recovered but forensic analysis will take time.
• September 20, 2024: Judge ruled there was “overwhelming evidence” to consider Naresh Bhatt a flight risk and danger to the community and denied bond.
• December 27, 2024: Naresh was charged again with murder and physically defiling a dead body. This is based on  DNA collected from multiple items inside the couple’s house, including a hairbrush belonging to Mamta, a piece of carpet, a garbage can, a bathmat, a reciprocating saw and knives.
• March 17, 2025: Authorities have conducted approximately 50 physical searches, and  44 search warrants, court orders and subpoenas. Naresh remains behind bars. A status hearing is scheduled for March 20. The trial is set to begin in September.

Is Tariff good for people?

In the 18th and 19th centuries, tariffs became a central economic policy tool, especially during the Industrial Revolution. Countries like Britain and the United States implemented protective tariffs to foster domestic industry growth.

One of the most notable historical tariff policies was the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 in the United States. This act raised tariffs on thousands of imported goods, leading to retaliatory measures from other countries and exacerbating the Great Depression. Who is going to win, the home team or visitors?  The prize was high. It was lucrative. All we needed to see was some action. Each boxer was waiting for their time to punch.

करेन्सी कारोबारमा संलग्न एक गिरोहलाई प्रहरी पक्राउ गरेको छ। नेपालमा गैरकानुनी रहेको क्रिप्टो कारोबार तथा अनलाइन  ठगी गरेको गरेको कसुरमा प्रहरीले काठमाडौंका विभिन्न स्थानबाट  सात जनालाई पक्राउ गरेको हो। यो समूहले हालसम्म अभौतिक मुद्राको कारोबार गरेर तीन अर्बभन्दा बढी रकम ठगी गरेको पाइएको छ। यो रकम डिजिटल फरेन्सिक रिपोर्टको विवरणबाट प्राप्त भएको  थियो। विभिन्न बैंक तथा डिजिटल वालेट प्रयोगकर्ताहरूलाई समूहले झुक्याएर बैंक तथा वालेटहरूको आधिकारिक व्यक्ति भन्ने गरेको थियो।  प्रयोगकर्ताको ओटिपी/पिन माग गरेर अनाधिकृत रुपमा बैंक तथा वालेटहरूमा यो समूहले पहुँच पुर्‍याउँथ्यो। यो समूहले सोसल मिडिया ह्वाट्सएप, टेलिग्राम, फेसबुकहरूमा अनलाइन जब पाइने भन्दै ‘घरमै बसेर धेरै कमाउने सकिने’ भनी विज्ञापन गर्ने गरेको थियो।

Friends of Nepal and former US president Jimmy Carter laid to rest in Plains, Georgia

 

Former US President and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Jimmy Carter passed away at his home in Plains, Georgia, on Sunday (local time) at the age of 100 in December 29. He was laid to rest in his home town after his body was brought to U.S Capital Rotunda this week. He was buried to his beloved wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter per his wish.

Carter leaves profound and enduring legacy in Nepal's journey from conflict to peace. He played an important role in facilitating the end of the decade-long armed conflict and helping the integration of Maoist Rebels into mainstream politics. He co-founded The Carter Center with his wife which facilitated dialogue and monitored Nepal's transition from monarchy to federal democratic governance. His work helped Maoist guerilla to delist from the terrorist list. He also introduced The Camp David Accords and signed with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin in September 1978 and established a framework for a historic peace treaty concluded between Israel and Egypt in March 1979.

After leaving the White House, he earned a reputation as a committed humanitarian. He was widely seen as a better former president than he was a president. He announced in 2015 he would build 100 homes in Gairigaun, Chitwan as a part of Habitat for Humanity. However, due to a massive earthquake in Nepal, he had to cancel the plan due to resource constraints. Habitat for Humanity has helped build or improve more than 39 million homes since its founding in 1976 and helped 13.4 million people build or improve homes in 70 countries. It relies in volunteers to build new homes and repairs existing homes.

India drops below Pakistan and Afghanistan in press freedom

Press freedom in India has taken a turn for the worse, according to the World Press Freedom Index. 

The country’s ranking has slipped to 159 out of 180 countries, according to a report released by Paris-based Reporters Without Borders. It's neighboring country Nepal is at 74. However other neighboring countries are in the similar range e.g. Bangladesh is at 165, Pakistan is at 152 and Srilanka is at 150.

“The situation has gone from ‘problematic’ to ‘very bad’ in three other countries: Tajikistan down to 155th, India down to 159th and Turkey down to155th.

Even Taliban-led Afghanistan and crisis-hit Pakistan fared better at 152 and 150 respectively. Norway topped the ranking.

India’s slide has come amid many developments in the country that may indicate a shrinking of space for free media.

For instance, the British broadcaster BBC is under severe pressure from prime minister Narendra Modi’s government. It was subjected to income tax raids and a forex-related probe after it carried a documentary scathing of Modi for his alleged role in the Gujarat 2002 in 2023.

If big media like BBC has trouble in India, how about the situation of small medias and bloggers?

अदानी  ग्रुपले भने अमेरिकी न्याय मन्त्रालय र अमेरिकी सेक्युरिटीज एन्ड एक्सचेन्ज कमिसनले अडानी ग्रीनका निर्देशकहरूविरुद्ध लगाएको घूसखोरीको आरोपलाई आधारहीन भन्दै खण्डन गरेको छ ।

विश्वमा कतै पनि महिला सुरक्षित छैनन्

संसारमा 50% भन्दा बढी महिलाहरू छन्। तर विश्वमा कतै पनि महिला सुरक्षित छैनन् । उनीहरुको घर, विद्यालय, बजार जेलमा समेत दिनहुँ बलात्कार भइरहेका छन् ।  अनुमानित 80 करोड महिलाहरू - लगभग तीन मध्ये एक - शारीरिक र/वा यौन घनिष्ठ साझेदार हिंसा, गैर-साझेदार यौन हिंसा, वा उनीहरूको जीवनमा कम्तिमा एक पटक (30 प्रतिशत महिलाहरू 15 र माथिका) शिकार भएका छन्।

राजविराज कारागारमा बन्दी जिवन बिताइरहेकी एक महिला कैदीलाई बलात्कार गरेको आरोप लागेका सोही कारागारका कर्मचारी बिरुद्ध अदालतले पक्राउ पूर्जी जारि गरेको छ । राजविराज ८ निवासी चन्दन भनिने चन्द्रनारायण यादवबिरुद्ध सप्तरी जिल्ला अदालतले आइतबार पक्राउ पुर्जी जारि गरेको हो । ३० वर्षि यादव राजविराज कारागारका कार्यालय सहयोगि हुन् । विगत १७ वर्षदेखी करार सेवामा कार्यरत यादवविरुद्ध पक्राउ पूर्जी जारि भएसँगै उनको करार सम्झौता रद्द गरिएको जेलर प्रविण कुमार अधिकारीले जानकारी दिए ।

हरियाणाको फरीदाबादमा एक बाबुले आफ्ना दुई नाबालिग छोरीलाई बलात्कार गरेको घटना सार्वजनिक भएको छ । अभियुक्तलाई प्रहरीले पक्राउ गरेको छ । आरोपितकी श्रीमतीले एसजीएम नगर प्रहरी चौकीमा  उजुरीका आधारमा आरोपितविरुद्ध जबरजस्ती करणीको मुद्दा दर्ता गरिएको हो । यो डरलाग्दो घटना  एसजीएम नगर पुलिस स्टेशनमा दर्ता भएको थियो। अभियुक्तले आफ्नो अपराध स्वीकार गरेको प्रहरीले जनाएको छ । 

संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका एउटा हाई स्कूलमा  रातमा बलात्कार भएको थियो, जब एक हाई स्कूल केटी, रक्सीले असक्षम थिहिन। उनकै साथीहरुले पालै पालो बलात्कार गरेर, बलात्कार गरेको फोटो हरु सामाजिक संजाल मा राखेका थिए।   उनलाई अन्य विद्यार्थीहरूको औंलाहरू (डिजिटल प्रवेश) द्वारा योनिमा घुसाइएको थियो। पीडितलाई अस्पताल लगीयो र यौन दुर्व्यवहार  फोटो खिचियो। यो केशमा ५ जना बिद्द्यार्थी समातिए भने स्कुल प्रसाशक समेत केशमा मुछिएका थिए।  

प्रदूषण के मामले में भारत से बराबरी कर रहा है पाकिस्तान!

 

पाकिस्तान के लाहौर शहर और भारत के नई दिल्ली में लगातार प्रदूषण बढ़ने के बाद वायु प्रदूषण की स्थिति गंभीर स्तर पर पहुंच गई है. सोमवार को लाहौर का गुणवत्ता सूचकांक 485 AQI था, जबकि नई दिल्ली का AQI 437 था, जो प्रदूषण का गंभीर स्तर है।

Tihar in Nepal

 In Nepal, Deepawali (called Tihar or Yamapanchak) is a unique and vibrant festival, celebrated over five days with distinct customs that blend reverence for nature, animals, and familial bonds. Here’s how Tihar is celebrated in Nepal:

First Day: Kaag Tihar (Worship of Crows)

Nepal Flooding affecting big cities

Hundreds of people have died in various disasters such as floods and landslides in different parts of Nepal since last week.

Flooding and landslides caused by continuous rainfall have killed so many people in the country while hundreds are still missing.

Rain began pouring down for two days, with low-lying neighborhoods in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, inundated by surging floodwaters.

The Kathmandu valley recorded 9.4 inches of rain in the 24 hours, it was the highest rainfall recorded in the capital since at least 1970.

Several roads and major highways were blocked by landslides triggered by the rainfall. Travels are either banned or discouraged due to the bad road conditions.

Many houses were flooded in Kathmandu and some houses close to rivers even swept away.
